Caretaker (permanent, full-time position) - advertised on Seek and on College website in August/September 2025
Catholic Cathedral College is seeking an experienced, motivated and conscientious Caretaker, who takes pride in doing great mahi to create and maintain well-presented, safe, clean and well-functioning learning and living environments for rangatahi, kaiako, kaimahi and manuhiri. This permanent position is over 52 weeks, 40 hours per week (7 30 am - 4 00 pm over the full year, with half-hour lunch break) worked on site (with four weeks of annual leave to be when the school is officially closed for instruction, unless there has been prior agreement to do otherwise). Flexibility is required to occasionally work additional hours, eg to attend on-site out-of-hours emergency call-outs.
A free onsite car parking space is available, and a cellphone (for work purposes only). Safety boots and overalls, if required for work tasks, will be provided, in lieu of the clothing and footwear allowance.
Remuneration is payable above Collective Agreement rates, depending on experience, skills and qualifications. Salary loading is negotiable at the time of CA increases. Conditions are in accordance with the Caretakers, Cleaner, Canteen and Groundstaff Collective Agreement, which is under negotiation in 2025. Relevant elements of the CA settlement of MoE/E tū negotiations will be included; to be ratified in 2025/2026.
Start date is by negotiation, by mid-October 2025, subject to police vetting clearance.
The diverse array of responsibilities includes, but is not limited to:
Performing routine maintenance and repairs across the school buildings and grounds, including painting, gardening and cleaning
Ensuring that all school facilities, equipment and systems are maintained in good working order, and fully compliant
Ensuring the security of the College
Co-ordinating and overseeing the work of external contractors (including contract cleaners) and service providers as required
Assisting with the set-up and take-down of school events and activities
Completing regular health and safety inspections (BWoF) and implementing corrective actions
Providing general support to school administration and staff as needed
The person appointed to this position will have:
Proven experience as a Caretaker/Handyman, or in a similar maintenance/facilities role, with a sound understanding of Health and Safety regulations and best practice; adherence to College policies is required
Strong practical skills and the ability to perform a variety of maintenance,repair and gardening tasks; only specific tasks are outsourced
Sound ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Physical fitness with high levels of energy, and capable of regular bending and lifting tasks
Capability to manage budget areas through prudent purchasing, and maintaining supplier relationships
A high level of problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with sound judgement and great attention to detail
The ability to self-manage, working both independently and as part of a team
Demonstrated organisational skills, being both adaptable and efficient - this is a busy role, with competing demands on time
Computer skills, with the ability to upskill in the use of Google for Education (including G/Mail, G/Calendars and G/Sheets), and other IT equipment and software as required
A focus on service in relation to working with staff and other stakeholders
A willingness to embrace and support the special Catholic character of the College, and Te Tiriti of Waitangi

Catholic Cathedral College is a special character, co-educational College with over 500 students, situated in central Christchurch. We are a culturally diverse and whānau-focused school.
