Career Development/Exploring

At Catholic Cathedral College, we provide a range of career advice and support for our learners from years 10 to years 13. Senior career interviews are held yearly for our year 12 and 13 Ākonga (students) with Year 11 and Year 10 supported with subject choice and information sessions on careers.

Senior ākonga are given the opportunity to take part in exploring many varied career options at the yearly Canterbury Careers Expo. Ākonga considering tertiary study will have the opportunity to attend tertiary provider's presentations at school along with taking part in university campus tours and open days.

Navigating the World of Careers

We work alongside our teaching team to ensure support and guidance are provided to our learners. Encouraging our young people to use the career tools provided to seek out information on their career journey will enable their independence in decision-making and make the transition from secondary school to their next step in life more manageable.

Appointments

Ākonga can also make appointments to see Danielle throughout the year. Appointments are available from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm for assistance with identifying future career pathways, tertiary study options, pre-employment preparation and vocational training.  Drop-ins are also available during break times.

CareerWise

Keeping up to date with career news, events and job vacancies is easy with CareerWise. Ākonga and whānau will receive regular newsletters. CareerWise is a one-stop shop for our careers department.

Pre-employment prepartion 

We offer advice on interview skills, cover letters and CV preparation through to what to wear to the interview.

Tertiary 

Ākonga (students) will have the opportunity to experience visits from key tertiary and industry training providers during terms one and two. Scholarship information is provided to Ākonga, during term two along with course planning in term three.

Taster Days 

ARA hold free Taster days and information sessions throughout the year for seniors and juniors, a great way for Ākonga (students) get to experience ARA and get a taste of what it could be like. Ākonga will need to register their interest with Careers.

STAR at the University of Canterbury

At Canterbury University STAR courses for learners who have gained UE literacy and numeracy can study a first-year university course, once learners have achieved university entrance these courses can be credited to a University of Canterbury degree. 

Vocational Pathways

Gateway

Students can take part in the Gateway programme, with the opportunity to gain unit standards, whilst gaining valuable skills in the workplace. The purpose of Gateway is to provide learners with opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills required for future employment​​​​​​.

Dual Enrolment

Dual enrolment options are available to learners wanting to gain level 2 and level 3 credits. Learners will be enrolled at school and can take part in dual enrolment courses one or two days a week at an approved tertiary provider​​​​​​.

STAR Courses

A variety of holiday STAR programmes are offered by providers, and courses are free, with some providing NCEA unit standards.​​​​​​​
